Become Involved. Maintain Social Contact

The day finally arrived after years of plotting and planning. I stepped down. After 30+ years of a demanding career and raising a family, I found myself with a lot of time on my hands and a "to do" list with nothing to do. For the first time in years, I didn't have to answer to anyone or anything except myself.

Many of us are faced with two compelling questions as we consider winding down and enjoying a life of leisure: What's Next? and how can I maintain a high standard of living if I live another 25 years? We begin to realize that there is more to life than sitting around the house watching reruns of our favorite TV shows or playing video games after the initial euphoria of retiring or moving on to a less demanding life. While our "bucket lists" can provide us with a sense of anticipation and purpose, the real challenge begins with successfully managing the quality of our aging process on a daily basis.

The good news is that there are enjoyable ways to remain socially connected and active. The bad news is that you must be willing to put in the effort every day.

Begin with these simple suggestions:

Get up and put on your clothes. Who knows what tomorrow will bring? Prepare to leave the house and discover new things. Begin the day with optimism and a sense of adventure.

Take advantage of the fresh air and sunshine. Get outside at least once a day, if the weather permits. Take a walk around your neighborhood, go on short hikes, ride your bike, participate in a sport, or work in your garden. Stop and take in nature's splendor.

Make new connections and strengthen existing ones. Take the first step. Invite people to join you for coffee, lunch, or a special social event. Set aside time each day to call or visit a friend.

Attend classes. Maintain your brain's activity, meet new people, and have fun. There are numerous low-cost learning opportunities for older adults in your community. Consider taking classes at your local community college, university, YMCA, or Senior Center. Increase your social circle and connect with people who share your interests.

Become a volunteer: While volunteering is essentially unpaid work, the benefits to you and the community in terms of goodwill and quality of life are priceless. Volunteering allows you to step outside of your comfort zone, form new relationships and connections with community members, and develop a sense of accomplishment and identity.

Make use of technology. Your smartphone, computer, iPad, or other mobile devices are excellent ways to communicate with friends and family. Learn how to send cute pictures or funny videos via Facebook or text message. Accept the power of social media.

Continue to move. Maintain your body's strength and mobility by engaging in physical activity. Walking, gardening, and working out at the gym are all examples of physical activity. Try to engage in physical activities such as tennis, golf, joining a gym, or walking with a group of friends to stay socially connected.

At any age, be passionate about living a good life. Make a commitment to thriving by remaining active and socially connected.
