In Action Purpose

Families frequently contact me to say that their loved one is declining (many say dying) and they don't know why. There is no medical condition that is causing the decline. I ask about their life, relationships, careers, friendships, and finally, what kind of meaningful activities or hobbies they enjoy. "Nothing," I always get as an answer. My mother or father does nothing and has nothing to look forward to every day." This is a common failure to thrive scenario. It may seem obvious, but having no purpose significantly contributes to death at a young age. Humans require purpose because "who really wants to live?" "Words I've heard from the lips of elderly people.

WE NEED MORE GREAT AGING ROLE MODELS

When I started working at Hay House Publishing at the age of 29, I had great role models for getting older and living well. I had no idea what a gift I was receiving at the time. I observed how author and motivational speaker Wayne Dyer and Louise Hay aged and lived well over the next 14 years. It had a profound impact on me because I realized that growing older was not something to be sad about, but rather an opportunity to try new things and grow as a person. I saw both of them constantly seek out new projects in their lives, never considering themselves retired or too old to learn or start something new.

A MEANINGFUL AND JOYFUL LIFE IS DRIVEN BY PURPOSE

I had to drop something off at Louise's house once, and I was directed into her "hobby" room, where she was working on her painting. I was greeted by a massive elephant canvas in a rainbow of colors that was at least four feet tall. It amazed me that she had painted this. I was puzzled when she started taking diction classes. She went on to explain why you should improve your overall articulation, vocal tone, pitch, and so on. In her 80s, one of the greatest speakers of all time was attempting to improve herself! I was taken aback. She was also learning calligraphy at the time. I just kept my mouth shut this time.

She truly celebrated each birthday, and during my time at Hay House, I attended some fabulous birthday parties in her honor. She never wanted to avoid the next birthday, but rather rejoice in another year on this planet. She was always planning a trip, learning a new skill, writing another book whatever her passions were. Louise gave me some of the best life lessons and advice I've ever received while sitting in the back of a cab (in traffic) in New York City. It took me years to realize that living a purposeful life brings joy at any age.

IN HIS SIXTYS, MAGNETIC

Wayne Dyer was a charismatic human being, and even in his 60s, the Hay House young team, all in our 20s and 30s, loved to sit with him at dinner and listen to his stories and life philosophy. He frequently seasoned the conversation with salty jokes, and he had a quick wit that had us all laughing until tears streamed down our cheeks. He, like Louise, was always looking for the next meaningful project or adventure in his life. He dispelled myths about what a person in their 60s should be like, act like, and think like. Louise and Wayne both demonstrated that your sense of purpose drives your quality of life.

IS THERE AN AGING CRISIS ON THE WAY?

With so many people turning 65, some believe we are in an aging crisis. I believe it is a great opportunity for many people to learn how to age well, find meaning in their lives, and live well. After working in the senior industry for nearly a decade, I've seen people who embrace aging with purpose and meaning have the best resilience and quality of life until the end.

With so many people turning 65, this important demographic can once again have a significant impact on our planet and the lives of others in the last half of their lives. Imagine all the new skills and knowledge just waiting to be shared with young people who have no idea how life-changing it will be for them. I had no idea twenty-five years ago. Age gracefully!
